The Border Problem

Day 2  A classic Algebra problem: The Border Problem.
The apprentices solved The Border Problem using multiple representations and made connections between them by making explicit key mathematical concepts conveyed in the different solution pathways.  The following is a visual - that helps to better understand, geometrically, where the explicit rule for both the linear and quadratic functions come from.

Barbie Bungee Jump

Barbie Bungee Jump
In methods today, we worked on a performance task that required application of linear function to give Barbie (and Ken) a thrill of her lifetime.  Using a linear model and data collection, apprentices came up with a length and built a chord for bungee jumping that would get Barbie as close to the ground without hitting it.  This video clip is the actual jump of three dolls at UCLA's Kerchoff hall patio.
